Digital Indirect Bonding Financial Considerations

An inside look at the numbers.

Integrating a digital indirect bonding system into the office will introduce a lab fee that isn’t present with direct bonding. That lab fee ranges from just over $100 to just under $1000, depending on the system. It is important for the office to understand the difference between direct bonding protocols and indirect bonding.

With brackets being placed properly, appointment intervals can often be lengthened to allow the wires to effectively work. Progress records must be captured, including a panoramic radiograph, but often a repositioning appointment is unnecessary. Looking at digital indirect bonding similar to aligner therapy, we have the ability to potentially decrease the number of visits it takes to complete treatment which increases our value per visit (defined as the treatment fee divided by the number of visits). Increasing the value per visit has several effects on the orthodontic office

  • a.) fewer patients coming through our offices on a given day or fewer days worked during the week
  • b.) patients and parents having to return to the office less times and thus missing less school/events
