Digital Indirect Bonding & Custom Bracket Systems

On the surface, it may seem odd to evaluate Digital Indirect Bonding and Custom Bracket Systems together, but they are inextricably linked. Digital Indirect Bonding is a process supported by a system of brackets, digital set-up software and trays. Each of the TechSelect Partner products compared below describe their components, options and pricing models.

Evaluation Criteria

AAO’s Committee on Technology (CTECH) recommends using the following criteria to evaluate digital indirect bonding & custom bracket systems.

Type of Bracket (standard, degree of customization):

Some providers allow you to use your standard/own bracket. If you choose to use a custom bracket system, the degree of customization and type of material are considerations.

Bracket Placement Software Used:

Bracket Placement Software is the tool used in the digital set-up and the steps in the process are largely the same with the set-up performed by the company and reviewed/adjusted/approved by the doctor.

Ability to 3D print trays in-house

Some systems allow you to 3D print your own DIB trays, while others do not.

For Third Party Trays, how are brackets loaded:

Some systems give you the option to load the brackets yourself, while others come loaded by the supplier.

Bonding Adhesive Application:

For most systems, bonding adhesive is applied in-house by you or your staff.

Timing:

Consider how many days is typical from the time an STL file is provided until you can approve the digital set-up and then how many days for trays to be produced and delivered to you so you can schedule your bonding appointment accordingly.

Minimum Number of Cases:

Some companies require a minimum number of cases to be purchased.

Costs:

There are a number of cost considerations including upfront set-up costs, brackets, software and trays. Some companies provide a bundled cost while others itemize.

Tech Support:

Consider the level of support for printing (chat, email, phone, phone wait times). Speak to colleagues about experiences with support.
